The Italian Breakfast

The Italian Breakfast

'Colazione' - Breakfast

In the USA we often use the phrase 'but first, coffee.' In Italy, they say 'prima colazione' (first breakfast) which, as you will soon learn, essentially means the same thing.

Breakfast in Italy normally consists of 'caffè latte' (hot coffee with milk) or coffee + a roll, a 'brioche' (like a croissant) or cookies.

Children usually drink hot chocolate or milk + cookies or a roll (usually filled with chocolate).

If you go out to a bar to have breakfast, it consists of a cappuccino + brioche or an espresso + brioche.

The typical "American Breakfast" is 100% non-existent... Although "brunch" is starting to gain popularity, many Italians still prefer to have just a coffee + brioche. But, eating 'macedonia' (fruit salad), breakfast cereals or yogurt for breakfast are slowly becoming popular. Fingers crossed that the idea of pancakes, sausage and eggs will soon be a thing!

The photo above is one of my favorite bars in Milan. It was designed by the amazing film director Wes Anderson and recreates the atmosphere of a typical Milanese Cafè.
