Weekend Getaway: Stresa, Italy
If you follow me on Instagram, you'll already know that over the past few weekends I have visited three gorgeous islands: L'Isola dei Pescatori, L'Isola Madre, and L'Isola Bella. My starting point for visiting each of these islands was always the small town of Stresa, which is located on Lake Maggiore and is only about a 10-minute mini boat ride away from each of these three islands.
Stresa is a town that only has about 5,000 residents and is located on Lake Maggiore in the Piemont region of Northern Italy. Only about an hour and a half train ride from Milan, it is very easily accessible. Once you've arrived, you'll be greeted with delicious restaurants, amazing views, markets and souvenir shops.
This town is very much a resort town that comes alive during the warmer autumn, spring and summer months. In addition to being able to easily access these three islands, the town of Stresa also has many things to do and see. From the Villa Pallavicino, that has beautiful gardens and a zoo; to the breathtaking Grand Hôtel des Îles Borromées, where the world-renowned author Ernest Hemingway once stayed and later set some of his novel Farewell to Arms (1929). There are so many different things to explore before taking one of the many boats from the waterfront over to one of the islands! In addition, every summer Stress hosts the "Settimane Musicali" - one of Europes most important classical international music festivals.
If you are visiting Northern Italy, I would highly recommend spending a weekend out of visiting the town of Stresa then taking the mini boat ride over to exploring L'Isola dei Pescatori, L'Isola Madre, and L'Isola Bella!
